Built on the D&D 5e SRD — 2024 (“5.5e”, SRD 5.2) by default, 2014 (SRD 5.1) one click away.

What it does

This free D&D character creator turns a one-sentence idea into a complete, rules-accurate 5e character sheet in seconds — stats, gear, spells, a written backstory, and a matching portrait. Whether you want to build a character from scratch, generate one at random, or make a hero to a precise concept, it covers levels 1–20. No login, no paywall.

What you get

  • A full character sheet — abilities, AC, HP, saves, and skills.
  • Spells picked and validated against the rules for your class and level.
  • Multiclassing handled — combined spell slots, prerequisites, and each class’s features.
  • Class and subclass features scaled to your level, 1–20.
  • Starting equipment and a written backstory.
  • A matching AI portrait.
  • Foundry VTT & Roll20 export.

Levels 1–20

Every derived number scales with level — proficiency bonus, hit points, spell slots, spell save DC, and ability score improvements. Pick any level from 1 to 20; most tables start around level 3, where subclasses come online. The rules engine recalculates the whole sheet so the math is always right. Need just the casting numbers? Use the spell slot calculator.

Multiclassing — combined spell slots, prerequisites, and features

It handles multiclassing end to end, not just single classes. Describe a split like “rogue 3 / monk 9” and the engine works out the combined caster level and combined spell slots, checks each class’s ability-score prerequisites, keeps Warlock Pact Magic in its own short-rest pool, takes Extra Attack as the max (never stacked), and scales every per-class feature to the right level — for both the 2014 and 2024 rules. Want just the numbers? Use the multiclass spell slot calculator, or read the multiclassing guide.

Builder or generator — your call

Use it as a character builder by choosing race, class, background and level from menus, or as a character maker and generator by describing your idea in plain language and letting it fill in the details. Either way you get the same complete, table-ready result.

How to write a great prompt

You only need one sentence. For the richest result, give it a hook — a wound, a secret, or a goal that pulls against the party — and one vivid detail you can picture, like a color, a scar, or a prized possession. For example: “A dwarf cleric whose god has gone silent, still tending the shrine out of stubborn love.” The hook shapes the backstory and the detail steers the portrait. Prefer to keep it simple? Just name a race and class and let it surprise you — every prompt, lazy or detailed, returns a complete, rules-accurate sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the character creator free?

Yes — completely free, no login and no limits to roll up a character.

What levels does it support?

Every level, 1 through 20, with full SRD support. Most tables start at level 3, where subclasses unlock.

Does it handle multiclassing?

Yes. Describe a multiclass build — for example "rogue 3 / monk 9" — and the engine computes the combined caster level and combined spell slots, checks the ability-score prerequisites, keeps Warlock Pact Magic as a separate pool, and applies each class's own subclass and features. There is also a dedicated multiclass spell slot calculator.

Does it do spellcasters and spells?

Yes. Full spell lists for levels 0–9, with spells picked and validated against your class and level, the right number of cantrips and prepared/known spells, spell slots, and an accurate spell save DC and attack bonus.

How many classes and subclasses are there?

All 13 classes — the 12 core classes plus the Artificer — and 40+ subclasses (the full 2024 Player's Handbook roster, four per class, plus a broad 2014 set), not one subclass per class. Every species for each edition is covered too.

Can I choose a feat?

Yes. Name a feat in your description — for example "a fighter with Great Weapon Master" or "a sharpshooter ranger" — and it is applied in place of an Ability Score Improvement, with its effects reflected on the sheet. Popular feats are supported, including Sharpshooter, Great Weapon Master, Polearm Master, Sentinel, War Caster, Tough, Resilient, Mobile, and Alert.

Do I have to know the rules to use it?

No. Describe a hero in a sentence and let it build. If you want to lock in a specific level, class, alignment, or background, tap a rule button and it drops into your description as text you can edit. The engine does all the math regardless.

Does it use AI?

Yes — the AI makes the creative choices and writes the backstory, but a deterministic rules engine does every calculation. So the numbers are accurate, not hallucinated.

Can I export to Foundry VTT or Roll20?

Yes — export to both.

Is this official D&D content?

It is built on the System Reference Document — both SRD 5.1 (2014) and SRD 5.2 (2024), CC-BY-4.0. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast.

Which D&D rules does it use — 2014 or 2024?

Both. A Rules toggle switches between the 2024 rules (“5.5e”, SRD 5.2) and the 2014 rules (SRD 5.1). 2024 is the default — backgrounds, feats, species traits, and weapon mastery follow the edition you pick — and 2014 is one click away for tables still on the classic rules.

How are ability scores set?

By default the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), assigned to fit your class and concept. You can also use point-buy: state your own six scores in the description (e.g. "STR 15, DEX 14, CON 14, INT 8, WIS 12, CHA 10") and it builds from them, as long as they are a legal 27-point buy.
