Why is it called "5.5e"?
The 2024 ruleset is the official revision of D&D fifth edition. Wizards of the Coast calls it the 2024 rules, but players nicknamed it “5.5e” because it sits between a patch and a whole new edition — it keeps the d20 core and stays compatible with your 2014 characters and adventures while updating species, backgrounds, feats, and the martial classes. So a “5.5 character builder” and a “2024 character generator” mean the same thing: this one builds both, and flips to classic 2014 with a single toggle.
2024 (5.5e) vs 2014 (classic 5e)
The 2024 rules keep the d20 core but change how a character is assembled. The headline differences:
- Ability scores — the +2/+1 increase moves off your species and onto your background.
- Origin feat — every background grants a starting feat at level 1.
- Weapon Mastery — martial classes unlock a mastery property (Sap, Vex, Cleave…) on the weapons they wield.
- Subclass at level 3 — every class chooses its subclass at the same level.
- Species, not race — and species traits are decoupled from ability bonuses.
